Profit & Loss explained

How your profit figure is built, line by line.

Open Finance > Profit & Loss (managers and owners).

How it is built

  1. Revenue - sales, at the price each item was sold for on the day. Changing a price later never rewrites past profit.
  2. Cost of goods - what those items cost you.
  3. Gross profit = revenue minus cost of goods.
  4. Stock losses - damaged, lost or expired goods, valued at cost. Shown on their own line and never counted as sales.
  5. Expenses and salaries - approved ones only.
  6. Extra income - approved ones only.
  7. Net result = what is left.

What is not in it

  • Buying stock - it is not an expense; its cost arrives through cost of goods when sold.
  • Waiting-for-approval items - they count once approved.
  • Money the owner puts in or takes out.

If a product has no cost or selling price, profit may be incomplete. EazyStock flags these as "Needs pricing" rather than invent a number.
